Thomas Fuller was an enslaved African man known across early America for his extraordinary mental math abilities, earning the nickname “The Virginia Calculator.” Born around 1710 in West Africa — likely between present‑day Liberia and Benin — he was kidnapped at age 14 and brought to Virginia in 1724, where he spent his life working on a farm. Despite being illiterate and receiving no formal education, Fuller possessed a rare, prodigious ability to perform massive calculations entirely in his head.
His talent became widely known when members of the Pennsylvania Abolition Society tested him with complex arithmetic problems. Fuller calculated the number of seconds in a year and a half in about two minutes, and the lifetime seconds of a 70‑year‑old man in 90 seconds — correcting the testers when they forgot to include leap years. His feats were documented by Dr. Benjamin Rush, a Founding Father, and used by abolitionists as powerful evidence of Black intellectual brilliance during a time when enslaved people were falsely portrayed as inferior.
