🧠 Early Life & Education
- Born enslaved in New York City in 1813, Smith was freed at age 14 by the Emancipation Act of New York.
- He attended the African Free School, where he excelled and was chosen to speak to the Marquis de Lafayette in 1824.
- Denied entry to U.S. colleges due to racism, he traveled to Scotland and earned three degrees from the University of Glasgow, including a medical doctorate in 1837—becoming the first African American to hold a medical degree.

- Upon returning to New York, Smith opened the first Black-owned pharmacy in the U.S. and treated both Black and white patients.
