🧬 Born into Slavery, Built a Legacy

  • Born August 15, 1818, in Georgia or Mississippi, Biddy was enslaved from birth and later gifted as property to a Mormon family.
  • She walked 1,700 miles behind a wagon caravan from Mississippi to Utah, tending livestock and caring for her children along the way.

⚖️ Fought for Freedom

  • In 1856, while living in California (a free state), Biddy bravely challenged her enslavement in court.
  • Despite laws barring Black people from testifying against whites, Judge Benjamin Hayes ruled in her favor, freeing her and 13 family members.

🩺 Midwife, Nurse & Entrepreneur

  • Settled in Los Angeles, where she became one of the city’s most sought-after midwives, serving both wealthy and poor communities.
  • Saved her earnings and became one of the first Black women to own land in L.A., eventually amassing a fortune of $300,000 (over $9 million today).

🕊️ Philanthropy & Community Impact

  • Founded the First African Methodist Episcopal Church in her home in 1872, now a major institution with thousands of members.
  • Provided food, shelter, and medical care to anyone in need—Black or white.
  • Helped establish schools and aid centers for Black children and travelers.

  • Died in 1891 at age 73 and was buried in an unmarked grave, later honored with a headstone in 1988.
