Backpack (Black Wall Street, also known as the Greenwood district)
$42.87
Black Wall Street, also known as the Greenwood district, was a thriving African American community in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Let me share more details:
Origins: Founded and developed by African Americans starting in 1906, Greenwood became a self-sufficient and prosperous business district.
Economic Hub: The area boasted clothing shops, theaters, restaurants, jewelers, and more. Residents intentionally supported local Black businesses, creating a vibrant economic ecosystem.
Tragedy Strikes: However, on May 31, 1921, a white mob attacked Greenwood during the Tulsa Race Massacre. Armed rioters looted and burned down businesses, homes, schools, churches, and other institutions.
Impact: The devastation left as many as 300 people dead and around 10,000 homeless. It remains one of the most horrific acts of racial violence in American history.
Greenwood’s legacy endures as a testament to resilience and the fight for justice. 🕊️🌟
