Weekender Bag “From Battlefields to Brotherhood Buffalo Soldiers e Story Lives On.”
$52.00
The Buffalo Soldiers were African American soldiers who served in the U.S. Army, primarily on the Western frontier, after the Civil War. In 1866, Congress created six all-Black cavalry and infantry regiments, later consolidated into four—the 9th and 10th Cavalry and the 24th and 25th Infantry.
Their duties included:
- Protecting settlers and stagecoaches.
- Guarding railroad crews and wagon trains.
- Fighting in the Indian Wars and maintaining order in the West.
- Serving in national parks as some of the first park rangers.
The nickname “Buffalo Soldiers” was given to them by Native Americans, possibly due to their fierce fighting spirit or their dark, curly hair resembling buffalo fur.
Despite facing racial discrimination, they built a legacy of bravery and service, with 18 Buffalo Soldiers receiving the Medal of Honor. Their contributions paved the way for African Americans in the military, including the first Black officer to graduate from West Point, Henry O. Flipper
