Harriet Tubman was born Araminta Ross around 1820 in Dorchester County, Maryland. She later adopted her mother’s first name, Harriet, and took her husband’s surname, Tubman.

Tubman led dozens of enslaved people to freedom, using a network of safe houses and supporters.
