At the turn of the 20th century, African Americans founded and developed the Greenwood district in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This vibrant community, also known as Black Wall Street, flourished as a Black economic and cultural mecca. It boasted barber shops, salons, clothing stores, jewelers, restaurants, taverns, pool halls, movie houses, and offices for doctors, dentists, and lawyers. However, tragedy struck on May 31, 1921, when a white mob attacked, looting and burning down businesses, homes, schools, churches, and more. The official death toll was 36, but historians estimate it may have been as high as 300, leaving up to 10,000 people homeless12. The Greenwood District’s legacy endures as a testament to resilience and the fight against racial violence.
