Born Rebecca Davis on February 8, 1831, in Christiana, Delaware, Dr. Crumpler was raised in Pennsylvania by her aunt, who frequently cared for sick neighbors. This early exposure to healthcare inspired her to pursue medicine.

Before earning her medical degree, Crumpler worked as a nurse for eight years in Massachusetts. In 1860, she was admitted to the New England Female Medical College, where she became the first Black woman in the U.S. to earn an M.D. in 1864.

After the Civil War, she moved to Richmond, Virginia, where she provided medical care to freed African Americans, despite facing racism and discrimination. She later returned to Boston, where she continued her practice and wrote A Book of Medical Discourses in 1883, offering guidance on women’s and children’s health.

Her legacy is one of resilience, compassion, and groundbreaking achievement.
