Alice Augusta Ball was a brilliant chemist who, at just 23 years old, developed the Ball Method, the first effective injectable treatment for Hansen’s disease (leprosy). Before her discovery, chaulmoogra oil—a traditional remedy—was too thick to be absorbed properly. Ball refined the oil into an injectable form, revolutionizing treatment and offering hope to thousands.
Tragically, Ball passed away in 1916 at just 24 years old, before she could see the full impact of her work. After her death, Arthur L. Dean, the president of the University of Hawai‘i, took credit for her discovery, renaming it the “Dean Method”. It took decades for Ball to receive proper recognition, but today, her name stands as a symbol of resilience and scientific excellence.
