More Than a T-Shirt—It’s a Tribute
Frederick Douglass “Fritz” Pollard was a pioneering African American football player and coach. Born in 1894 in Chicago, he became the first Black head coach in the NFL with the Akron Pros in 1921. Before that, he was one of the first two Black players in the league in 1920, alongside Bobby Marshall.
Pollard was a dynamic running back, earning All-American honors at Brown University and leading his team to the 1916 Rose Bowl, making him the first Black player to compete in the game. Despite facing racism and exclusion, he recruited other Black players and fought for integration in professional football.
His legacy lives on as a Hall of Famer, a champion, and a trailblazer who opened doors for generations of Black athletes.
