Caroline Still Anderson (1848–1919) was an American physician, educator, and activist. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she was the oldest daughter of William and Letitia Still—both leaders in the American abolitionist movement. Here are some key points about her remarkable life:
Education and Early Life:
Caroline attended prestigious schools, including the Institute for Colored Youth (now Cheyney University of Pennsylvania).
Her father’s successful career in the coal industry allowed her to receive a good education.
She matriculated at Oberlin College, where she became the first black president of the Ladies’ Literary Society.
Medical Career:
After her husband’s death, Caroline pursued medicine at Howard University College of Medicine and later transferred to the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania.
In 1878, she graduated with her Doctor of Medicine degree, becoming one of only two black students in her class.
Caroline worked as a drawing and speech teacher to support herself during medical school.
Legacy:
Caroline Still Anderson was a pioneering physician in the Philadelphia African-American community.
She broke barriers as one of the first Black women to become a physician in the United States.
Her dedication to education, activism, and healthcare continues to inspire us today.
