Jumbo Mug, 20oz (Vicente Ramon Guerrero)
$9.77
Vicente Ramón Guerrero Saldaña (1782–1831) was a remarkable figure in Mexican history. Born in the small village of Tixtla, in what is now the state of Guerrero, he was of mixed-race heritage—both African and Indigenous. His parents were Pedro Guerrero, an African Mexican, and Guadalupe Saldana, an Indian. Guerrero played a crucial role in the fight for Mexico’s independence, becoming one of the leading generals during the Mexican War of Independence. His legacy extends beyond military prowess:
Champion of Civil Rights: As head of the “People’s Party,” Guerrero advocated for civil rights for all, especially African Mexicans. He called for public schools, land title reforms, and other progressive programs.
Abolition of Slavery: Guerrero formally abolished slavery in Mexico on September 16, 1829. His commitment to equality extended not only to the racially oppressed but also to the economically disadvantaged.
Betrayal and Tragic End: Unfortunately, Guerrero’s efforts were met with betrayal. Reactionaries drove him out of his house, captured him, and ultimately executed him. Despite this tragic end, his impact remains significant.
Mexicans with pride recognize him as the “greatest man of color.” After his death, the state of Guerrero was named in his honor—the only Mexican state named after a former head of state. Vicente Guerrero’s legacy continues to inspire and promote awareness of black history
