The Harlem Hellfighters were a highly distinguished African-American infantry unit in World War I, known officially as the 369th Infantry Regiment1. Here’s what they accomplished:
Formation: They originated as the 15th New York (Colored) Infantry Regiment and were a National Guard unit.
Combat Prowess: The Hell fighters spent more time in combat than any other American unit during WWI.
Recognition: The French government awarded the entire unit the Croix de Guerre, France’s highest military honor for bravery, along with 170 individual medals for valor.
Cultural Impact: Their regimental band, led by James Reese Europe, is credited with introducing jazz music to Europe.
Despite their courage and sacrifice, upon returning home, the Harlem Hellfighters faced racism and segregation from their fellow countrymen. Their legacy is a powerful reminder of the contributions and struggles of African American soldiers in American history
