Cotton Canvas Tote Bag (Claudette Colvin)
$9.48 – $9.97
Claudette Colvin, born Claudette Austin on September 5, 1939, in Montgomery, Alabama, is an American pioneer of the 1950s civil rights movement. At the age of 15, she was arrested for refusing to give up her bus seat to a white woman on a crowded, segregated bus—nine months before Rosa Parks’s more widely known act. Colvin’s courageous protest challenged segregation and contributed to the fight for civil rights. She was one of the plaintiffs in the Browder v. Gayle case that ultimately led to the end of bus segregation in Montgomery, Alabama. Despite her significant role, Colvin’s efforts were initially overlooked due to her circumstances. In 2021, her criminal record was expunged, recognizing her historic contribution
