Dr. Eliza Ann Grier was a trailblazing African American physician, and the first Black woman licensed to practice medicine in Georgia. Born into slavery in 1864 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, she faced immense challenges but remained determined to pursue her education and career.

After the Civil War, Grier moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where she attended Fisk University, working alternately as a teacher and a student to afford her tuition. She later wrote to the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania, seeking financial assistance to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor. Despite financial hardships, she graduated in 1897 and set up a private practice in Atlanta, specializing in obstetrics and gynecology.

Dr. Grier’s career was marked by her resilience and dedication to improving healthcare for African Americans. She faced racial discrimination and financial difficulties but continued to advocate for her right to practice medicine and serve her community. Her legacy is a testament to her strength and determination in the face of adversity
