Cotton Canvas Tote Bag (CAUDETTE COLVIN)
$18.08 – $20.52
Claudette Colvin is a significant figure in the American civil rights movement. Born on September 5, 1939, in Montgomery, Alabama, she made a courageous stand against racial segregation at the age of 15. On March 2, 1955, Colvin refused to give up her seat to a white woman on a segregated bus in Montgomery, nine months before Rosa Parks’ more famous protest.
Colvin’s act of defiance led to her arrest, and she became one of the plaintiffs in the landmark Browder v. Gayle case, which ultimately led to the Supreme Court ruling that declared bus segregation unconstitutional. Despite her pivotal role, Colvin’s contributions were overshadowed by those of other civil rights leaders, partly due to her young age and the fact that she was unmarried and pregnant at the time.
Her story is a powerful reminder of the many unsung heroes who played crucial roles in the fight for civil rights
