Cotton Canvas Tote Bag (BASSIE COLEMAN)
$18.08 – $20.52
Bessie Coleman was a pioneering African American aviator and the first African American woman to hold a pilot’s license. Born on January 26, 1892, in Atlanta, Texas, she faced significant racial and gender barriers in her pursuit of aviation. Unable to find flight training opportunities in the United States due to discrimination, she traveled to France, where she earned her pilot’s license from the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale on June 15, 1921.
Coleman became a high-profile pilot, performing in air shows across the United States and earning the nicknames “Queen Bess” and “Brave Bessie” for her daring stunts. She hoped to inspire other African Americans to pursue aviation and dreamed of opening a flight school for African Americans.
Her legacy continues to inspire generations, and she is remembered as a trailblazer who broke down barriers in the field of aviation.
