Madam C.J. Walker, born as Sarah Breedlove on December 23, 1867, was an American entrepreneur, philanthropist, and political and social activist1. She is recorded as the first female self-made millionaire in America in the Guinness Book of World Records1.

Walker made her fortune by developing and marketing a line of cosmetics and hair care products for black women through the business she founded, the Madam C. J. Walker Manufacturing Company1. She became known also for her philanthropy and activism1. She made financial donations to numerous organizations such as the NAACP, and became a patron of the arts1. At the time of her death, she was considered the wealthiest African-American businesswoman and wealthiest self-made black woman in America.

Walker was born to parents who had been enslaved, and she was inspired to create her hair products after an experience with hair loss, which led to the creation of the “Walker system” of hair care. A talented entrepreneur with a knack for self-promotion, Walker built a business empire, at first selling products directly to Black women, then employing “beauty culturalists” to hand-sell her wares. She used her fortune to fund scholarships for women at the Tuskegee Institute and donated large parts of her wealth to the NAACP, the Black YMCA, and other charities.

She passed away on May 25, 19191. Her legacy continues to inspire and pave the way for future generations of entrepreneurs and activists.
