Marie Van Brittan Brown (1922–1999) was an American nurse and innovator. In 1966, along with her husband, Albert L. Brown, an electronics technician, she invented the first video home security system. They applied for a patent that same year, which was granted in 1969. Here’s how their groundbreaking system worked:

Home Security System:

The Browns designed a system with several lensed peepholes equipped with covers.  A vertically sliding camera allowed surveillance from peephole to peephole.
Inside the home, television monitors displayed the camera feed.
A microphone enabled communication with visitors outside.
They even included a feature to unlock the door remotely.

The patent also mentioned forwarding sound or vision to a security center and a push-button alarm system for contacting police or others.

Legacy and Recognition:

Although they hoped to interest manufacturers and home builders, the high cost of equipment hindered adoption.
Marie received an award from the National Science Committee, placing her among elite African-American inventors and scientists.
Her innovation paved the way for modern home security systems.
