Ceramic Mug 15oz (Sarah Rector)
$5.83 – $9.43
Sarah Rector (1902–1967) was an extraordinary African American woman who became known as the “Richest Colored Girl in the World.” Here’s her remarkable story:
Early Life and Family:
Sarah Rector was born in 1902 near the all-black town of Taft in what was then Indian Territory (now Taft, Oklahoma).
Her parents, Rose McQueen and Joseph Rector, were descendants of Creek Indians and listed as freedmen on the Dawes Rolls.
Sarah’s father, Joseph, was the son of John Rector, a Creek Freedman.
Oil Strike and Wealth:
Sarah was allotted 159.14 acres of land in Glenpool, Oklahoma, considered inferior for farming.
To cover the $30 annual property tax, her father leased the land to Standard Oil.
In 1913, an independent oil driller struck oil on her property, bringing in 2,500 barrels a day.
Sarah began receiving a daily income of $300 from this oil strike.
Guardianship and Activism:
Due to the law at the time, Sarah’s guardianship changed to a white resident named T.J. Porter.
She faced media attention and NAACP activism.
Unfortunately, she lost most of her fortune during the Great Depression.
Sarah Rector’s story is a testament to resilience and achievement, and she remains an inspiring figure in black history.
