Harriet Tubman (1822–1913), the remarkable American abolitionist and political activist, had a complex family history. Let’s explore it:

Birth Family:
Her parents were Benjamin “Ben” Ross and Harriett “Rit” Greene Ross. Ben was a timber estimator and foreman, while Rit worked as a domestic servant. After Ben gained his freedom, he purchased Rit’s freedom.
Harriet Tubman’s birth name was Araminta Ross.

HUSBAND

Tubman married John Tubman in 1844, but their marriage faced challenges. In 1849, fearing sale into slavery, Harriet fled the area and later returned to bring John north. Unfortunately, he had already married another woman.

Nelson Davis:  Nelson Davis boarded with Harriet for three years before they married in 1869.  Davis fought during the American Civil War.  They adopted a girl named Gertie.

Rescuing Family:

Harriet made 13 trips to Maryland to rescue her family members, friends, and others. She didn’t know the whereabouts of her sisters, except for Rachel, who died before they could reunite.
Background:
Enslaved families were often separated due to sales, rotations, or work assignments. Harriet’s family eventually settled in New York and Canada. Harriet Tubman’s legacy extends beyond her own freedom; she tirelessly fought for the liberation of others. 🌟
