The Journey of C.R. Patterson & Sons
Charles Richard Patterson was born into slavery in 1833 in Virginia. After escaping to Ohio, he worked as a blacksmith and eventually partnered with a carriage manufacturer. In 1873, he founded his own company, which became known for its high-quality carriages.
Transition to Automobiles
In 1910, Charles’ son, Frederick Douglass Patterson, took over the business. Recognizing the potential of the burgeoning automobile industry, Frederick shifted the company’s focus from carriages to automobiles. In 1915, they produced the Patterson-Greenfield car, making them the first Black-owned automobile manufacturer in the United States.
Challenges and Legacy
Despite the innovative leap, C.R. Patterson & Sons faced significant challenges, including competition from larger manufacturers like Ford. The company eventually ceased automobile production and shifted to producing buses and other vehicles.
Their story is a testament to resilience and innovation, highlighting the significant contributions of Black entrepreneurs to American industry.
