Fritz Pollard was a trailblazer in American football, breaking racial barriers in both collegiate and professional play. Born Frederick Douglass Pollard on January 27, 1894, in Chicago, Illinois, he became the first African American head coach in the NFL in 1921 with the Akron Pros.
Pollard was a standout athlete at Brown University, where he played as a halfback and led his team to the 1916 Rose Bowl, becoming the first African American to play in the game. His exceptional speed and agility earned him a spot on Walter Camp’s All-America team, making him the first Black running back to receive the honor.
After serving in World War I, Pollard transitioned to professional football, playing for multiple teams in the early NFL era. He was also instrumental in recruiting other Black players, such as Paul Robeson, and organizing the first interracial all-star game featuring NFL players in 1922
