Charles Richard Patterson (1833 – 1910) was a remarkable African-American entrepreneur, carriage manufacturer, and civil rights activist. Born into slavery in Virginia, he eventually moved to Greenfield, Ohio, where he became a prominent figure.
Patterson initially worked as a blacksmith and later partnered with a local businessman to form a carriage manufacturing company. In 1893, he bought out his partner and renamed the company C.R. Patterson & Sons2. This company became the first and only black-owned and operated automobile company in the United States.
Patterson was also a dedicated civil rights activist. He fought for the desegregation of schools in Greenfield, ensuring that his children could attend public high school1. His legacy continued through his son, Frederick Douglass Patterson, who transitioned the company into the automobile industry after Charles’s death.
