C.R. Patterson & Sons was the first African American-owned automobile manufacturer in the United States. Founded by Charles Richard Patterson, a formerly enslaved man, the company originally specialized in horse-drawn carriages before transitioning to automobiles.
Early Beginnings
Patterson started as a blacksmith and later partnered with J.P. Lowe to build carriages in Greenfield, Ohio. In 1893, Patterson bought out Lowe’s share and renamed the company C.R. Patterson & Sons, marking the inclusion of his son Frederick Patterson.
Automobile Manufacturing
After Charles Patterson’s death in 1910, Frederick took over and shifted the company toward automobile production. In 1915, they introduced the Patterson-Greenfield car, a two-door coupe that sold for $685–$850, competing with the Ford Model T.
Challenges & Legacy
Despite producing around 150 vehicles, the company struggled to compete with larger manufacturers like Ford and General Motors. By the 1920s, they pivoted to making truck and bus bodies, which became popular among Midwestern school districts. However, the Great Depression led to financial difficulties, and the company closed in 1939.
C.R. Patterson & Sons remains a symbol of resilience and innovation, proving that Black entrepreneurs played a vital role in early American automotive history.
