Black Wall Street, officially known as Greenwood, was a thriving African American community in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Here are the key points about its history:

Founding and Prosperity:

African Americans founded Greenwood starting in 1906 on what was formerly Indian Territory.  The community flourished with the opening of clothing shops, theaters, and businesses.  It became known as Black Wall Street due to its economic success and self-sufficiency.

Self-Sustaining Community:

Greenwood residents intentionally supported local Black businesses. They funneled their money into the community, creating a robust economic ecosystem.  The district boasted barber shops, salons, restaurants, jewelers, and more.

The Tragic Event:

In 1921, Greenwood was targeted by an armed mob during the Tulsa Race Massacre. The white supremacist attack resulted in the destruction of homes, businesses, schools, and churches.

The tragedy left a lasting scar on this once-vibrant neighborhood.
Despite the devastation, the legacy of Black Wall Street continues to inspire resilience and determination.
