Maurice Ashley is a Jamaican-American chess grandmaster, author, and commentator, known for breaking barriers in the chess world. Born on March 6, 1966, in St. Andrew, Jamaica, he moved to Brooklyn, New York, at age 12, where he developed his passion for chess.

Ashley made history in 1999 when he became the first Black chess grandmaster, earning the prestigious FIDE Grandmaster title. He has been a champion for chess education, coaching youth teams like the Raging Rooks and Dark Knights, both of which won national championships.

Beyond playing, Ashley has been a prominent chess commentator, covering major matches, including Garry Kasparov vs. Deep Blue. He has also authored books such as Chess for Success, which explores how chess can positively impact young minds.
