Prince William Pitt Leleiohoku II was a Hawaiian royal, composer, and heir to the throne of the Kingdom of Hawaii. He was a member of the House of Kalākaua, known for his contributions to Hawaiian music and governance.
Early Life & Royal Lineage
- Born January 10, 1855, in Honolulu, Oʻahu.
- Hānai (informally adopted) by Ruth Keʻelikōlani, later legally adopted in 1862 as her heir.
- Educated at St. Alban’s College, a precursor to ʻIolani School.
Political & Military Roles
- Worked in the Foreign Office and served as an officer on King Lunalilo’s personal military staff.
- In 1874, his brother Kalākaua was elected king, making Leleiohoku the heir apparent.
- Served as regent from November 17, 1874, to February 15, 1875, while Kalākaua traveled to the U.S. to negotiate the Reciprocity Treaty of 1875.
Musical Legacy & Influence
- Honored as part of Na Lani ʻEhā (The Heavenly Four) for enriching Hawaiian music and culture.
- Composed folk songs, including “Kāua I Ka Huahuaʻi”, which later became the popular American song “Hawaiian War Chant”.
Death & Succession
- Passed away at age 22 from rheumatic fever in 1877.
- His sister, Liliʻuokalani, was proclaimed the next heir to the throne.
