Founder of Provident Hospital:

In 1891, Williams founded Provident Hospital in Chicago.
Provident was the first non-segregated hospital in the United States, providing medical care to African American patients.

First Successful Heart Surgery:

On July 10, 1893, at Provident Hospital, Williams performed the world’s first successful heart surgery.
Despite contemporary medical skepticism, he repaired a wound in the pericardium (the sac surrounding the heart) without modern aids like blood transfusions or advanced anesthesia.
The patient survived for at least 20 years after the surgery.

Legacy and Achievements:

Williams also established the first school for African American nurses in the United States.  He served as a surgeon and made significant contributions to medicine and education.  His groundbreaking work paved the way for future advancements in cardiac surgery.
