Black Mug (11oz, 15oz) “Innovation in Motion: Sarah Boone’s Ironing Board Revolution.”
$15.00 – $19.00
Sarah Boone was an African American inventor and dressmaker best known for her improvements to the ironing board. Born Sarah Marshall in 1832 in Craven County, North Carolina, she was born into slavery but later gained her freedom after marrying James Boone, a free Black man, in 1847.
Boone moved to New Haven, Connecticut, where she worked as a dressmaker. Frustrated with the challenges of ironing fitted garments, she developed an innovative ironing board design that was narrow, curved, and reversible, making it easier to iron sleeves and bodices. She received U.S. Patent No. 473,653 for her invention on April 26, 1892, making her one of the first African American women to receive a patent.
Regarding payment, there is no clear historical record indicating whether Boone profited significantly from her invention. Many Black inventors of her time faced barriers to commercial success, often struggling to secure financial backing or widespread recognition for their contributions.
Boone passed away in 1904, but her legacy lives on as a pioneer in innovation and entrepreneurship. Her ironing board design laid the foundation for modern ironing boards used today.
