Mary McLeod Bethune was a visionary educator, civil rights leader, and advocate for African American women. Born on July 10, 1875, in Mayesville, South Carolina, she was the daughter of formerly enslaved parents and grew up determined to uplift her community through education2.

Bethune founded the Daytona Normal and Industrial Institute for Negro Girls in 1904, which later became Bethune-Cookman University. She tirelessly worked to provide educational opportunities for Black students, believing that knowledge was the key to empowerment.

Her influence extended beyond education—she was a close advisor to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, serving as the director of the Division of Negro Affairs in the National Youth Administration. She also founded the National Council of Negro Women in 1935, advocating for the rights and advancement of Black women.

Bethune was the only African American woman officially part of the U.S. delegation that helped create the United Nations charter, and she played a significant role in shaping policies for racial equality.

Her legacy is honored through numerous awards, including the designation of her home as a National Historic Landmark, and a statue in Washington, D.C., recognizing her contributions.
