Madam C.J. Walker’s life is a powerful testament to resilience, innovation, and Black excellence. Born Sarah Breedlove in 1867 in Delta, Louisiana, she was the first in her family born free after the Emancipation Proclamation. Orphaned at age seven, she began working as a laundress and married young to escape abuse.

Walker struggled with scalp issues and hair loss, which led her to experiment with homemade remedies. She eventually developed a line of hair care products tailored for Black women, including her famous “Wonderful Hair Grower”. Her method—known as the Walker System—combined scalp preparation, gentle shampooing, and pomade treatment.

- In 1906, she married Charles Joseph Walker and adopted the name Madam C.J. Walker.
- She founded the Madam C.J. Walker Manufacturing Company, headquartered in Indianapolis.
- By 1919, she had trained and employed over 25,000 Walker Agents, empowering Black women with economic independence.

Walker wasn’t just a business mogul—she was a fierce advocate for civil rights:
- Donated to the NAACP’s anti-lynching fund and the Black YMCA.
- Supported scholarships, orphanages, and retirement homes.
- Spoke out against racial violence and supported Black soldiers during WWI.
