Edmond Berger is credited with inventing an early version of the spark plug in 1839. His invention was designed to improve the efficiency of internal combustion engines, which were still in their experimental stages at the time. However, Berger never patented his spark plug, and some historians debate whether his device was fully developed or if the date is accurate.
Berger is believed to have been a Black inventor from Togo, West Africa, who later worked in France. His contribution to automotive technology was significant, but the first commercially successful spark plug was patented in 1902 by German engineer Gottlob Honold, working for Robert Bosch.
His story is a fascinating example of early innovation that paved the way for modern automotive engineering
