$13.00 – $17.00
Vicente Guerrero was a key figure in Mexico’s fight for independence and a champion of abolishing slavery. His life was marked by military leadership, political struggles, and a commitment to equality.
Early Life & Path to Revolution
Born in Tixtla, Mexico, in 1782, Guerrero came from humble beginnings. His father was a mule driver, and through his travels, Guerrero was exposed to ideas of independence. In 1810, he joined the fight against Spanish rule, becoming a skilled military leader under José María Morelos, another revolutionary hero.
Role in Mexican Independence
After Morelos was executed in 1815, Guerrero continued leading guerrilla forces against Spain. His determination and strategic brilliance made him a key figure in securing Mexico’s independence. In 1821, he joined forces with Agustín de Iturbide, and together they issued the Plan of Iguala, which laid the foundation for Mexico’s independence.
Presidency & Abolition of Slavery
Guerrero became Mexico’s second president in 1829. One of his most significant achievements was abolishing slavery, making Mexico a safe haven for enslaved people escaping from the United States. His presidency was short-lived, as he was overthrown in a rebellion led by Anastasio Bustamante.
Capture & Execution
After being forced out of office, Guerrero led rebel forces but was eventually captured, tried, and executed in 1831. Despite his tragic end, his legacy remains strong—Mexico’s state of Guerrero is named in his honor.
Legacy & Impact
While Barack Obama is celebrated as the first Black president of the United States, Guerrero holds the distinction of being one of the earliest Black leaders in the Americas. His legacy is honored in Mexico, where the state of Guerrero is named after him
Guerrero is remembered as a symbol of resistance, equality, and freedom. His abolition of slavery was a monumental step in Mexico’s history, and his contributions to independence solidified his place as one of the nation’s greatest leaders
