Bridget “Biddy” Mason was a remarkable African American nurse, midwife, entrepreneur, and philanthropist who rose from enslavement to wealth and influence in 19th-century Los Angeles.
Early Life & Enslavement
- Born August 15, 1818, in Mississippi.
- Enslaved by Robert Marion Smith, a Mormon convert who moved his family and enslaved people westward.
- In 1848, she walked 1,700 miles behind a wagon caravan to Utah, then later to California.
Fighting for Freedom
- California was a free state, but Smith illegally kept her enslaved.
- With the help of free Black allies, Mason petitioned for her freedom in 1856.
- A Los Angeles judge ruled in her favor, freeing Mason and 13 members of her family.
Success & Philanthropy
- Became a respected midwife and nurse, serving the growing Black community in Los Angeles.
- Saved her earnings and invested in real estate, becoming one of the first Black landowners in L.A.
- Founded the First African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church in 1872, which remains a cornerstone of the community today.
- Used her wealth to support the poor, feed the hungry, and provide shelter for those in need.

- Passed away on January 15, 1891, leaving behind a legacy of resilience, generosity, and leadership.
